The Shelter Alliance Cellular Phone Collection Program
Travelers Aid Society of Los Angeles is collaborating with Shelter Alliance to collect used, unwanted, or broken cellular telephones in the name of fundraising, thereby tapping into the hundred million idle phones sitting in drawers and closets. The telephones are collected at drop-off points and then shipped to Shelter Alliance for sorting and categorizing. Shelter Alliance then pays Travelers Aid Society of Los Angeles between $1.00 and $25.00 per phone. Shelter Alliance is based in Miramar, Florida. Its memberships include the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the Texas Association Against Violent Assault, the National Recycling Coalition, and the Better Business Bureau of South Florida, just to name a few.
Where do we collect the cell phones?
The main collection site is our Travelers Aid Society of Los Angeles office at LAX, 205 World Way, Los Angeles 90045.
What does an individual, interested in making a cell phone donation, have to do?
Just give your used, unwanted, broken, cell phone to a TASLA Volunteer or a TASLA Staff member and he/she will deliver it to the Travelers Aid Society of Los Angeles office at LAX, or you can take the cell phone to the office yourself. You can call us at 310-646-2270.
What does Travelers Aid Society of Los Angeles (TASLA) get?
TASLA gets a maximum of a $25 donation for each cell phone donated through the Shelter Alliance Program.
Why is TASLA participating in this program?
Because the money raised through Shelter Alliance will provide funds for the continuous recognition of our Volunteers throughout the year: providing afternoon teas for small groups, gift certificates, and raffle items at Volunteer recognition events. Money raised will also allow us to purchase more resources for casework services (telephone calling cards, airline/train/Greyhound tickets and food for people in crisis).
Who can contribute old cell phones?
Everyone. We're reaching out to the Volunteers at LAX and Union Station and TASLA staff, their circle of family and friends and other organizations in which they are involved, and the members of TASLA's Board of Directors.
